In early 2024, I had the honor of being selected as the featured artist for the Q2 Stadium Zebra Gate mural. Each year, a new artist brings their vision to the wall beside the gate, and for the 2024 season, I was given the opportunity to leave my mark.
With just 28 days to move from concept approval to final production, the project was a race against time. The mural had to be completed by opening day, and I was still putting on finishing touches at 10 a.m. that morning! Working on corrugated metal with a boom lift presented unique challenges, but it also pushed me to grow as an artist.
Using only spray paint, I crafted a design that spanned the full 40-foot width of the wall. This wasn't just a mural; it was an effort to bring energy and vibrancy to the stadium, blending the spirit of Austin with the dynamic branding of Austin FC.
The 2024 theme, chosen by the Austin FC team, was music—an ideal fit for me. I moved to Austin years ago for my love of music, and this city’s live music scene continues to inspire me. In the mural, I celebrated Austin's musical legacy, spotlighting icons like Stevie Ray Vaughan, historic venues like Austin City Limits, and even including a hidden nod to Willie Nelson through paisley elements woven into the design.
For the color palette, I used the team’s signature Verde green alongside vintage-inspired tones to give the mural a unique look that resonates with their marketing for the season. The result is a bold, energetic piece that connects the city’s rich cultural heritage with the excitement of game day.
One of the most memorable moments of this project was being named the “Heartbeat of the Verde” during a game that season—a special honor that connected my work to the incredible Austin FC community.
